The Modern Tension Index 2025
Everyone thinks they are exhausted, but some countries have turned fatigue into a lifestyle. By comparing sleep hours, screen time, and workload across 40 nations, we found who is barely holding it together and who has mastered the art of unwinding.
From the sleepless grind of the Philippines and Malaysia to the steadier rhythm of France and Germany, the world’s tension gap is clear.
The results show how modern habits quietly wire us for fatigue. This is less about productivity and more about recovery. It reveals who is living on the edge and who has finally learned to rest.

Global Tension Map
Each country’s score runs from 0 to 100. Higher scores mean more tension: less rest, longer screen exposure, and heavier workloads.
The higher your country ranks, the more your body pays the price. If you are in one of the high-tension zones, your nervous system has been in overdrive. It might be time to press pause.

Methodology
The Modern Tension Index measures how daily routines stack pressure on the body and mind. It compares three lifestyle factors that shape how "tense" modern life feels: sleep, screen time, and workload.
- Sleep (45%) — Average nightly duration from World Population Review 2025. Less sleep contributes to higher tension, so the scale is inverted.
- Screen Time (35%) — Daily average from DataReportal 2025. Longer screen hours increase tension through overstimulation and reduced rest quality.
- Workload (20%) — Annual work hours per employee from OECD / ILO 2024. More work hours reduce recovery time and raise baseline stress.
Each metric is normalized to a 0–100 scale for fair comparison across different units. Sleep values are reversed so lower sleep increases tension. The weighted scores are combined using this formula:
Tension Index = (Sleep × 0.45) + (Screen × 0.35) + (Work × 0.20)
The final index is rescaled to a 0–100 range, where higher scores represent greater lifestyle tension. This allows simple, global comparison between countries with very different habits.
Why It Matters
The Index highlights a simple truth: tension is not just emotional, it is physical. Our bodies are wired for survival, not constant stimulation. Every hour of lost sleep and every minute of blue light adds up to a body that forgets how to relax.
Torment Pad was created to help switch that response off through controlled relief. Its acupressure surface stimulates circulation, triggers endorphins, and helps the body move from tension to recovery. The Index measures the world’s strain. Torment Pad helps you release yours.
